Classic Z car styling was greatly influenced by the Jaguar XKE. The original Datsun 240Z was sold in the USA between 1970-1973. It featured a spirited 2.4 L, straight 6 cylinder engine, 4 speed transmission, exceptional handling and good gas mileage. It was very reliable and inexpensive to maintain and insure. The first cars sold for about $3500 and were an immediate hit.

It was followed by the 260Z in 1974, which featured a slightly larger 2.6L engine. The 260Z was only made for one year. It was a transition car between the 240Z and the 280Z, which appeared in 1975 and made until 1978.

This car is a 1974 260Z which was the first year a 2+2 model was offered. The 240 body was stretched 12 inches to accommodate a rear seat. It was the perfect compromise for the young man that wanted to buy a sports car and his practical wife who reminded him they had 2 small children!

The first generation Z cars, (1970 to 1978) have really caught on with car collectors.

They are rapidly appreciating in value. The most sought after models are the early 240Zs.

Nice ones are now routinely selling for $35,00 – $40,000++

Really fine examples are selling for much more. Last summer a 1970 240Z sold for $124,000 on the BaT auction website. In January 2020, a ’71 Datsun 240 sold for $310,000. Just recently, a rare 240Z sold for $805,000!

The upward trend in value is expected to continue. As the highest priced models continue to rise, so should the 260Z and 280Z which share the same platform and body style as the early 240Zs.

This car had one owner from 1979 until 2016. The car was driven regularly until the mid 80s.

Around 1985, the owner put the car away for winter storage as he did every year, inside his business warehouse. It then remained in storage until I purchased it in November 2016.

Even though the car had sat for more than 30 years and needed a good bath, it was still impressive.

The repaint, which was done at some point in the early 80s, looked very nice.

The interior however, was quite worn.

My mechanic picked up the car and towed it back to his shop. Over the next 18 months or so, he went through all the mechanical systems to make sure the car was safe and roadworthy once again. The gas tank was drained and cleaned out. All fluids were changed and all new brakes, belts, hoses, battery, tires, were installed.

The carpeting was replaced and the seats reupholstered.

You can see pictures of the floor from when the old carpet was removed. The floor is original and very solid.

As for what is still needs, it could use new weatherstripping around the doors and rear hatch. There is some cracking in the center console.

The interior window cranks, door handles and carpet hold downs could be replaced.

Suspension upgrades are now available which have improved significantly over the past 45 years.

Parts are readily available and are reasonably priced.

The car is now a very nice driver quality car that can used as reliable, every day transportation if you choose,

while continuing to upgrade it. You get lots of “thumbs up” whenever you drive it. You rarely see pre-1979

Z cars anymore, even at local cruise nights. It should be a very good and the most fun investment you own.

My wife keeps reminding me I have too many toys. I can’t afford to get rid of her, so a few toys have to go!

Only Kidding!! Actually, I own a 1965 Corvette which I’ve owned for 35+ years. I am currently having some restoration work done on it.

I’ll be getting the Corvette back soon so I need to move a few toys due to limited storage space.

It was sure much easier when my cars were Hot Wheels which fit under my bed at night!
