1974 Datsun 260z Perfect Project Car
I am unfortunately needing to sell my project car. The kids are getting bigger and time is now at an all-time premium, so this project has to go. She’s a late year 1974 Datsun 260z, painted bright red metallic by a previous owner, with a rare dealer optioned vinyl top. Looks kinda like a bass boat, which is pretty cool I guess. When I bought it 8 years ago it already had a V8 swap in it, an AMC 304 with a 3 speed auto. I fixed it up and drove it until the transmission started to slip. I wanted to make more power with it and sourced an AMC 360 to replace the 304 while also rebuilding the Torque Flite 904 three speed auto. The 360 has the same block dimensions, so many of the performance parts for the 304 bolt right up to the 360.
I had the 360 completely rebuilt at the machine shop with the following specs:
• New .30 thousands over pistons to match block
• Crane Performance Cam
• Holley 600 CFM Carb
• Edelbrock Aluminum intake
• Crane Electronic Ignition
• New double roller timing chain
• New performance clutches and steels in the TF 904
• Complete flush and rebuild of transmission, including seals and performance reverse manual valve body (must do 2nd gear burnouts only)
• Hurst Ratchet Shifter
The new engine and transmission have been mounted in the car, but it still needs to be wired, cooling plumbed, exhaust installed, and old gas removed before running the motor. It’s not a race motor by any means, but should be a very healthy street motor around 350hp to the wheels. And it should be plenty of fun with a slap shift 3 speed auto. Also included with the car are a full set of adjustable custom coilovers with camber plates. These are weld in units and the stock shock tubes will need to be removed, because back in the old days they expected you to rebuild it instead of replace stuff. Also included are two full sets of wheels, one is a 16×9 low offset CCW look alike wheels with brand new Khumo tires. They look great on the car, but the coilovers will need to be installed for the front wheels to fit under the fenders. The other set is a 14 inch Appliance branded aluminum Mag wheel with BF Goodrich Radial TAs that fit and look great.
A ton of extra parts will be included as well, including oil and trans coolers, updated lower front bumper, custom shortened drive shaft, seals and gaskets, Haynes manuals, as well as stock interior pieces including a good condition center console, perfect seats, and a dash with only one medium crack (these things are notorious for falling apart), should be very easy to repair, then flock the dash if you wanted to. The gauges are custom ordered Speedhut Gauges, with GPS speedometer so that you can change wheels and gear ratios all you want and still know your exact speed. The new buyer could rip all this out and start over if you really wanted to, with any number of awesome swap ideas, but I think it would be cool to sell it to someone that wanted to complete it.
I’m asking $8,000 for everything, and I really don’t want to part it out. It’s maybe three or four weekends from being back up and running as an upgraded version of the 90s show car that it definitely used to be (I have the trophies to prove it). She’s not perfect, but she’s a very solid car that’s been garage stored for a long time. I’ll try to answer any questions as best as I can, I’ve had this car on the back burner for way too long.
Here’s an ancient video of it running with the old 304 and newly installed Speedhut Gauges: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abjiIdijiAQ
